As our contribution to currents debates about "Western" versus "global" esotericism, in this programmatic article we discuss the relevance of translation to the study of esotericism. Between the "sceptical" and the "optimistic" perspectives on intercultural translation, we defend an intermediary open-ended dialogical approach with central attention to the agency of translators and publishers.

Generous Hermeneutics: Hans Thomas Hakl and Eranos

An analysis of Hans Thomas Hakl's contribution to the study of the Eranos circle and its influence in the study of religion and esotericism. The core argument is that Hakl's work is based on a "Hermeneutics of Generosity" in contrast with the more common "Hermeneutics of Suspicion" that has informed scholarship on Eranos.
