A Visual World: Leonora Carrington and the Occult

A short article about my favourite surrealist / magical realist painter Leonora Carrington (1917-2011), whom I was privileged to meet at her home in Mexico City a few years before her death. I argue that her refusal to accept any difference between visual and visionary experience is at the basis of how the occult functions in her work.

This preface to a German translation of Montfaucon de Villars' Le Comte de Gabalis (the foundational text for later occultist beliefs in elemental beings that can achieve immortality by having sex with human beings) is a translation from the section "Elemental Fiction" in my Esotericism and the Academy.
